How Safe Are Your Medical Records?

Cyber-attacks on healthcare organizations are on the rise. The percentage of healthcare organizations that have reported a criminal cyber-attack has risen to 40 percent in 2013from 20 percent in 2009, according to an annual survey by the Ponemon Institute think tank on data protection policy.
According this recent Reuters article, stolen health credentials can go for about 10 or 20 times the value of a U.S. credit card number. Medical identity theft is often not immediately identified by a patient or their provider, giving criminals years to abuse such credentials. According to experts who have investigated cyber-attacks on healthcare organizations, fraudsters use stolen data to create fake IDs to buy medical equipment or drugs that can be resold, or they combine a patient number with a false provider number and file made-up claims with insurers.
Last month, the FBI warned healthcare providers to guard against cyber-attacks after one of the largest U.S. hospital said Chinese hackers had broken into its computer network and stole personal information of 4.5 million patients. It is no surprise that secure faxing is increasing throughout the healthcare industryas faxing remains one of the most secure ways of transmitting sensitive information, as it is a secure, end point to end point transmission.
RightFax and Fax2Mail cloud solutions offer a secure method of transmitting protected health information, while supporting compliance by digitizing paper-based protected health information for private, secure, and auditable electronic distribution.  In addition, the new RightFax Encryption Module encrypts all fax images stored in the RightFax Image Directory, as well as preventing any unauthorized access to the fax images.
With more than 10,000 RightFax solutions deployed worldwide, Advantage Technologies is the leader in architecting, installing and supporting leading RightFax fax solutions in North America.  Data security, privacy, and sovereignty are key components of any RightFax solution, providing reliable exchange of even the most sensitive records, whether via an on-premise fax server, or in the cloud with multiple cloud deployment options.

Fast, Secure Faxing Via Email and RightFax

Large volumes of information flow in and out of organizations daily. It is critical that the exchange of information is done efficiently, cost-effectively and securely. Most organizations rely heavily on email to exchange valuable information; due to its speed of transmission and ease of use. However, most do not realize how vulnerable email can be.
According to Symantec's 2014 Internet Security Report, there has been a 62% increase in the number of breaches since 2013. Some other key findings include:
  • 1 in 392 emails contain phishing attacks
  • Over 552M identities were exposed via breaches in 2013
  • 23 zero-day vulnerabilities discovered
  • 91% increase in targeted campaign attacks
With some industry experts stating that at least 16 billion faxes are sent globally each year, faxing is still a reality in 2014. Faxing is considered to be one of the most secure methods of exchanging information, as it is a secure, point-to-point communication between the sender and the receiver. Also, fax transmissions are immune to viruses and malware. The problem is that traditional faxing is not often considered to be a quick or cost-effective method of exchanging information. Furthermore, there is still a security risk when using a physical fax machines, as a document may be viewed by an unauthorized person.
However, with the latest technologies, sending a fax can be done in 30 seconds or less. With such offerings as Easylink Fax2Mail, you can send faxes from just about anywhere you have an internet connection. Advantage Technologies can set you up with cloud faxing, integrate it with Outlook, and set you up with a fax number, all done in about 15 minutes.
Advantage Technologies helps enterprises eliminate fax machines while automating and integrating the exchange of fax documents. This leads to lowered operational costs and increased productivity, as well as increased compliance with security policies and governance regulations. Advantage Technologies offers a wide range of deployment options such as:
  • RightFax – OpenText RightFax provides a fully robust, secure, cost-effective, enterprise-grade fax solution perfect for those organizations looking to integrate fax with virtually any business application, increasing the speed of exchanging information.
  • RightFax Connect with RightFax is the hybrid fax solution when you need your telephony outsourced. You get the features and benefits of RightFax without an in-house telephony solution.
  • EasyLink Fax2Mail – a pure cloud, software as a service (SaaS) fax solution which gives users the ability to send and receive faxes as electronic messages, directly from email accounts or back office systems, without the need for an on-premise fax server or telephony solution.
Faxing can easily be integrated into your organization, leveraging your current infrastructure. Contact us at 866-730-1700 or at to learn more. for more information on how RightFax can help your organization. Learn more about the different products and solutions we have to offer.
